I am thinking about a problem about the relationship between large-scale brain regions and neuron types.
As written in the title, would the functions of two regions be more similar if they consist of similar neurons?
For instance, the region R1 has a frequency distribution (d1) of different neuron types, region R2 has a distribution d2, and region R3 has a distribution d3. If d1 and d2 are more similar than that between d2 and d3, whether this indicates the function of R2 is more similar to R1 than R3?
Are there some related references?
It is not just a question of single neurons grouped together but rather neural tissue that are organized to be able to deliver a specific function eg. the columnar arrangement of neurons in the visual cortex to be able to re-create an image.
Also, the plasticity of the brain allows for neurons adjacent to a damaged area to take over the functions. Thus, structure does not necessarily dictate function.
So I don't think there is an easy answer to your question.
