Dissociation constant of theophylline is reported as 8.81. Another report described that pKa of theophylline is 7.82 (strong acidic) and -0.78 (strong basic). However, the dissociation mechanisms of theobromine and caffeine are seemed different from that of theophylline. I am just confused. Liquid chromatographic analysis indicated theophylline is an acidic compounds.

Does someone give me clear explanation? Thanking in advance. Toshi
