Nabin if i will do like this, there will be no ash particles even of my bodywill remain, CH3Li is catching fire on contact with air, water, moisture , we cant open bottle even to transfer, then how to dispose in open space.
A convenient way is to add several equivalents of THF and let it react at room temperature under N2. This will over the course of several days decompose to methane, ethylene and lithium enolate. You should be able to safely react it with water.
thanx Craig and Sivaraman, craig one thing u mentioned that safely react with water, why we have to react with water? only by tetrahydrofuran disposal is not possible?
1) In argon bath mix methyllithium and excess of N-methylpyrrolidone, it does not produce explosive methane and heat, and then add a solution of baking soda (NaHCO3). Separate the precipitated lithium carbonate (to avoid poisoning of wastewater with toxic lithium salts). Aqueous solution will contain a harmless amino ketone and soda (Na2CO3).
Argon bath is easy to make from any large vessel, pouring argon through the tube with the exhaust at the bottom of the vessel. It is easy to control the level of argon - Slowly deep the lighter to the vessel and when the lighter is lower then argon, lighter flame separates - that will burn away a few inches from the cigarette lighter. Really magic )
All process is very fast , safe and enviroment friendly.
2) Add MeLi to 50% hexane solution of hexamethyldisilazane, after methane release cool in freezer and separate cristals of very valuable LiN(SiMe3)2 :-)
Nitrogen is not suitable, since it is lighter than air. Argon is much heavier, and is mixed slowly. If your city has a firm that weld stainless steel, argon should not be a problem.
Can be add methyllithium to N-methylpyrrolidone at room temperature, only bytemperature control . There is an addition to the amide carbonyl group, it is not very exothermic process. Unless overheat, allow cool slightly. methylpyrrolidone has high boiling point and heat capacity, so that combustion will not occure. As argon bath you can use a ordinary plastic basin, with a side height of 30-40cm. It is better to mix the reagents in a metal bowl or pan from heat-resistant glass. It goes without saying you need to use rubber gloves, goggles or face shield, apron.
