What is the most accurate way of calculating wind direction (2D NESW), wind speed and vertical wind movement using 3D Ultrasonic Anemometer data in the form of uX-uY-uZ m/s (or U-V-W vector) data? I am looking for calculations, methods and/or sources for these approaches.

This is a classic problem in turbulence. There are many text books on the subject. If you are interested in field measurements as apposed to laboratory
measurements, you might inquire to the group at NCAR.

The derivatives of the vertical velocity W in x- and y-directions can be neglected with respect to the derivatives of U and V in the z-direction (Waldteufel and Corbin, 1979). In addition to the movement due to the wind, the hydrometeors have a fall velocity (Wf < 0). Using a uniform wind eld and a constant fall velocity, the radial velocity Vr can be calculated as a function of azimuth and elevation.
