I was wondering if the process of beamforming is the same as coherent integration.
I say this because in the case of digital beamforming, we basically multiply the result of 1st FFT (Range FFT) with a steering vector and then add up the result of all the antenna elements for a specific range gate. Therefore, performing a coherent integration over antenna elements.

I can give some conceptual answer and you can apply this conceptual answer on your question. Coherent integration means that we have vectors which have different angles, then we rotate these vectors to align them and then add them. This will be maximum possible sum of the vectors.
The other method is to add the magnitudes of the vectors then the result will be the same.
Mathematically assume we have:
v1= A1 and angle theta1,
v2= A2 and angle theta2
.....................
vn = An and angle theta n
The coherent sum will be Sum Vi from 1 to n assuming theta1=0
The other case when one gets A1,A2, A3,.... and An
then the sum will be = Sum Si from i=1 to n.
