Sampling strategies in research in different disciplines and research areas and from one study to another are very different. There are two main types of sampling methods:
Types of probability sampling include simple random sampling, systematic sampling, stratified sampling, and cluster sampling.
Types of non-probability sampling methods include Convenience Sampling, Quota Sampling, Judgmental Sampling, and snowball sampling.
In probability sampling, each of the community units can be included in the sample with a certain probability. In non-probability sampling, the selection of the sample is not based on the rules of probability, and the sample is obtained with the help of human judgment. Therefore, non-probabilistic estimation errors are often non-random and unmeasurable. In these methods, no matter how large the sample size is, the samples often cannot be a true representation of society. However, sometimes non-probability sampling is the best sampling method. Like when it is not possible to prepare a sampling frame.
