Agroecology is the science of sustainable farming as well as a political movement that aims to improve the way food is grown and processed globally. Fundamentally, agroecology is about shifting the control of the land, seeds, markets and labour out of the hands of big business and back into the hands of small-scale farmers. Climate-smart agriculture on the other hand side is an integrated approach to managing landscapes—cropland, livestock, forests and fisheries--that address the interlinked challenges of food security and climate change.

Agriculture is believed to have contributed to climate change through pollution in form of excessive application of fertilizer, pesticides and degradation of forests, water bodies. So experts came up with number of new approaches to mitigate and adopt climate change in agric production. Hence implementing sustainable agriculture.

These are in my view more of semantics and terminology issues. Otherwise a lot in common.

At one level there does appear to be overlaps and possible convergences between CSA and the traditions of agroecology presented in the box. For example, FAO’s general definition of CSA describes attributes that are also claimed by agroecology: “CSA sustainably increases productivity, resilience (adaptation), reduces/removes greenhouse gases (GHGs) (mitigation), while enhancing the achievement of national food security and development goals” (FAO, 2010).

Moreover, proponents of CSA realise that approaches that focus exclusively on agricultural production without taking into account environmental sustainability are likely to have negative, and possibly, irreversible consequences. Indeed, CSA advocates emphasise the need to sustainably increase agricultural productivity and incomes.

CSA is sub set of agro ecology. CSA is all about coping with changing scenarios of the agro ecology.

An example of smart farming is to encourage farmers to forward their crop residues to paper, board, and biofuel industries, instead of just burning them, which damage both the economic value of residues, human health, and the environment. Climate smart agrotechniques take care of the agro-ecology. Both are complementing each other...

CSA is specific to deal with practices to be followed to deal with climate change may or may not necessary go with natural agroecological principles but certainly directed towards agroecosystem sustainability. Ecological farming, conservation agriculture , natural farming all are directs off shoots of agroecology principles.
