The males of the above two species are easily differentiated by the songs, but it is a real problem to differentiate between the females of Chorthippus biguttulus and Chorthippus brunneus.
Can someone help me with the differentiation process?
I found this method in a identification guide, but when you are in field and you catch one of the either spp is becomes hard to readily differentiate by this method. Sometimes in case of smaller females it is really hard even in lab to use this method. Can you recommend any other method?
Following Holst (1986, Fauna Entomologica Scandinavica, there seems to be overlap between female C. brunneus and C. biguttulus regarding to the amount of stridulatory pegs. Female C.brunneus: 50-90; female C. biguttulus: 75-120. The Dutch keys Kleukers and Krekels (2004) and Kleukers (2007) even say that females of the C. biguttulus-group are unidentifiable.
