With the availability of high resolution Lidar DEM, automatic lineament generation should be possible in areas with tectonic history. I am wondering how to extract the lineaments automatically. Then one can go a ground check via field work or compare with existing literature.

Your question tackles a very important issue, however, it is difficult to answer it. The reason for that comes from the difficulty of defining the term "lineament". Even if I assume I know what you mean by lineament (I guess you mean a sort of geological/tectonogeomorphic feature), if we give the same map/image/DTM to ten different analysts, I think the result will be at least 3-4 different maps, maybe more.
Consequently, it is very difficult to automate something that has no common, consensual manual solution.
Anyhow, to try to answer your question, I think it is a good start to scan through the relevant works of my colleagues Norbert Pfeifer, Christian Briese, Gottfried Mandlburger and Johannes Otepka who did a lot of research (mostly from technical point of view) on that since the early 2000s.

As I mentioned above, I am aware that this is not a proper answer to your question. If you find better, more advanced approaches, please let me know.
Another approach can be to try to find quasi-planar facets in the scene, and the outlines of these facets could coincide with lineaments.

I have great respect for the possibilities of automated identification of lineaments, but they certainly are challenging to develop and proof. However there are many method to extract lineament from satellite image or Digital elevation Models.

I am told that using linear filters one can delineate the lineaments. However I have my own reservation on the same. I too agree with Dr. Balazs, that it is important to understand what type of lineaments one is trying to delineate. According to the definition, lineaments are nothing but any linear features on the earth surface. These linear features can be due to straight alignment of faults or fractures or rock contacts or intrusives like dykes / sills or hill ridges or drainages, etc. Hence how can this be automated and delineated.

Dr. Francesco Salvini and Dr. Paola Cianfarra, professors of the University Roma 3 (Italy), have been researching lineaments since 1980's, supported by the Wise's researches. Now they are researching the automatic lineament detection through the SID software, which was written by Salvini. Salvini and Cianfarra have investigated automatic lineament detection in different geotectonic environments, such as Italy, Antarctic, Artic, and Brazil, as well as other planets and moons (I.e. Ganymede). The results are very consistent and have supported the Creation of tectonic models.
