In coming years, MOOC's will become a force to reckon with! What is interesting is to see whether any future MOOC's business model will facilitate democratization of overall academia!

Beyond academia, in the US, corporate training market ranges between $$50-70 billion! Recently, in an edX course on big data 3,500 people from over 2,000 organizations enrolled. Outcome: $1.75 million. Incredible! Enormous opportunity for evolving MOOC's business models!

The outcome (revenue) was through corporate licensing...3,500 people from over 2,000 organizations for edX course on big data!

Our journal (Online Learning, 18 (3), 2014) recently published a study by Fiona Hollands at Teachers College, Columbia University.  Her work suggests that there is no solid consensus on a business model or even a rationale for offering MOOCs amongst a large segment of MOOC producers.
