In rats, the frequency of so called Mayer waves is 0.4 Hz, in rabbits it is 0.3 Hz, in dogs and humans: 0.1 Hz. Anybody interested in an empirical study in comparative physiology?
I thing that there are already enough problems with understanding land animals, with approximately constant ventillation. In sea animals I would expect charge - discharge cycles related with diving cycles (if any such periodicity exists).
So instead of good answer you gave another good question. ;-)
