The cropping system models, in general. are process oriented, in which the various components of the system are modeled using empirical relationships developed between the state variables involved, as measured in short-term, small-plot field experiments. With the current level of understanding of the various processes in the soil-water-plant system, is it possible to develop mechanistic models at the whole system level for simulation and prediction of system behavior in response to external, internal stimuli like climate variability and change or else?
