I am looking to survey anyone willing to share their commonly used references for diatom identification. I would grateful if you could provide the habitat type you most commonly work on (e.g. marine plankton, freshwater streams, wet walls, etc...), and a list of the top 5 references you use. If you could provide an author(year), brief title of the work, and whether is it primary literature, a book, or a website.

Good idea regarding the survey!
I'm currently working on freshwater diatoms in a sediment core spanning the last 20,000 years. The lake from which the core was retrieved is located in North east China (under a cold temperate climate). My main diatom flora are:
Hofmann et al. (2011) - Diatomeen im Susswasser-Benthos von Mitteleuropa (i.e. the update of the Krammer & Lange-Bertalot book series). book
Diatoms of USA website
Metzeltin et al. 2009- Diatoms in Mongolia, Iconographia Diatomologica vol. 20 - book
Houk et al. 2010. Fottea 10 (Supplement) = Atlas of freshwater centric diatoms, part iii - book
Houk et al. 2014 Fottea 14 (Supplement) = Atlas of freshwater centric diatoms part iv - book
... as well as a very large collections of articles published in Diatom Research, Phytotaxa, Nova Hedwigia, etc..., and more books (The Diatoms of Europe series, many of the Iconographia Diatomologica volumes and a few of the Bibliotheca Diatomologica volumes).
I use - Fresh water algae of United States by Smith along with other articles
