As I work on my doctorate, I do so in the hope that I will ultimately be able to contribute to research projects and studies as a telecommuter since my disabilities render it impossible to work in an office. I am a highly curious self-starting altruist who likes nothing better than to solve intellectual and social puzzles and problems.

A lot of the projects out there require a central administration and analyst to put together results of a study once it is concluded. There are also many observational projects that are done using historical data and data collected from healthcare providers during a research period. I see all of these being positions that with current technology that can be a telecommuting job. Many researchers from universities across the world collaborate on projects using technology between the universities. In my experience the trend of finding ways to control cost is important to most companies. Telecommuting is one way they save money by limiting the space required for employees, providing equipment such as a laptop or phone lines and several other savings because an allowance for a cell phone and the specialized software does not cost as much as providing the equipment directly. The only problem with telecommuting I have run into is that it takes a special type of person to work from home and not let life and distractions around the house degrade the work done. The company I currently work for as long as an employee meets deliverable in the first 90 days of employment they are given an option to work from home. This is becoming more common in healthcare services such as billing, insurance, and other positions that do not require the telecommuter to interact directly with a client in person. I think in time with improved technologies that most positions that do not require direct interaction will be available for telecommuting. The best thing I can recommend for you is that you do all that you can to distinguish yourself as a subject matter expert and companies will be more willing to allow you to work for them by telecommuting because they want the best people and if that is a condition of getting the best, unless there are job functions that cannot be done remotely, they will meet that demand.
