I'm working on a method using Deuterium NMR (2HNMR) to observe different quadrupolar splitting patterns of single phase and multiphase surfactant/D20 solution (lamellar, hexagonal liquid crystals). I have done proton and carbon NMR before but am not very familiar with 2HNMR. Can this be done using a normal solution NMR instrument (Bruker AV 400MHz) or does it require a special probe or a more advanced instrument like solid state NMR to observe the quadrupolar splitting of deuterium nuclei? When preparing my sample for 2HNMR analysis, do I need to dissolve it in any solvent beside deuterated water that was already in the solution, i.e. CDCl3, because some of these solutions are very viscous (hexagonal phase, cubic phase). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
