Hello. I have a conceptual question for the community today. If root lengths of two different genotypes in Arabidopsis are significantly different and they are showing a difference in LR emergence trends, is LR density (# ofLRs/root length) the right parameter to test here. I worry since the lengths are different, LR density won't hold true for comparison. Insights, suggestions?

basically you need to consider both parametersw as you discuss. And as you further consider, they will mean different things which, however, you can interpret acordingly and find out where the difference is: i.e. initiation per number of cells in a linieage (thus, it might be also intereasting why the root length is different: more cells of the same size or more extended cells, but same number), etc.

I think a lot depends on how stunted the shorter line is and why it is shorter, e.g. are there meristem issues in the shorter line, or has it got a phosphate uptake problem (for example). If the answer to these is yes (or if the shorter line is so incredibly stunted as to be barely a root at all), then any increase in LRs could indeed be an artefact.
