Mangipudi, case studies are one of a range of qualitative research methods, which, when used rigorously, can highlight the intricacies, complexities and richness of a set of phenomena within a contextualised setting. It is in depicting the varieties and nuances of cases that qualitative researchers and other researchers who are sympathetic to its usage, that case studies can help us understand the implications and implicit meanings within them. The two points that you have mentioned and discussed about case studeis are quite scientific and interesting. The only problem with case-studies as you very well know is that as it is used to conduct qualitative studies the conclusions arrived can not be generalized.

I see case studies as educational tools. Though they cant be generalized, they can always drive the discussion and bring out the necessary insights for broadening the perspective and enhancing the knowledge. I have also seen that in most of the short case studies, the end results are obvious. The expectations from students are to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge from multiple disciplines. However, I think case studies as potent learning tools when used to identify and understand a real world problem, helping the students to analyze the situation and develop multiple perspectives. They can help us understand the systemic nature and build systems thinking capabilities, when used in a multi-disciplinary context. Have you come across a situation where the same case study has been analyzed by the same set of students in different classes, guided by professors of different discipline? That would be so enriching!

I totally agree with you. When the same case studies are analyzed by a different set of academicians or learning communities, the results arising out of those case studies provide different perspectives/solutions to the same problem. So, case studies could be both hindsight and a possibility.
