Hi everyone! I have an unusual query. How do you all ensure that your research papers will be evaluated (reviewed/rejected/accepted) within reasonable time frame? Most of the journals do not offer a time line and we have experienced delays of more than a year in multiple cases. Ethically, we can not submit anywhere else unless we get response from the one where we have submitted. What is your experience and how you deal with it? Any suggestions/pointers? Thanks.

It depends on your field of research. For some disciplines a year is normal, but this should not be the case. I would follow up as often as you can. Ask for a status update. Withdraw your paper if you want to submit it somewhere else.

I have similar experiences, but I have noted that there is quite a difference between journals, even within the same series of journals. It helps to write to the editor to enquire on the status from time to time, so that you can get more information than just 'under review'.
There is a suggestion that mega-journals publish faster but I have no experience with this.
Finally my punchline - it is a good idea to have papers in the different stages of the publication pipeline (conception, writing, review before submission, submission, review after submission, ...) where possible.
Thanks everyone for your input. I had a bitter experience in two cases. In one, after one year long wait, the paper was rejected (though it was later published in a better journal). In second case, after two years and two revisions, we are still waiting for final verdict. From suggestions given above, I now inquire from editor before submission. Interestingly, there are few 'fast publishers' who promise to respond within 2 weeks, but charge huge article process charges. So the bottom line is, inquire before submission.
