There are some breeders practicing dehybridization of hybrid plant varieties. Yet there is not much out there on the success of these attempts. I would be greatefull for any experience (did it work and what do you need to consider?) or hints to literature.
Yes, it is a general practise nowadays and being one of the reason for narrowing down the base of germplasm. Means reduction of variability. Although little success has been achieved but considering few points can aid to achieve greater success. First of all more number of F2 should be grown so that due to recombination more number of plants with desirable traits can be selected.
You should always save few seeds every generation in stock for repeating any of the generation in which trait goes missing. Continue this process upto F6-F7 to achieve stable lines. Now cross can executed between the desirable lines to combine desirable traits.
One more thing is that instead on using a single hybrid you can go for crossing two different hybrids and then doing the dehybridization using their progeny.
