We recently had a discussion in the German society for conservation of crop plants (www.nutzpflanzenvielfalt.de) about what should be included into biodiversity. The breeding industry seems to jump onto the biodiversity topic to sell and justify their products or even reach for funding in this way.

I personally would include "engineered life" into biodiversity but would distinguish three interrelated parts of biodiversity: wild biodiversity, cultured biodiversity (using breeding techniques only based on crossing and selection) and engineered diversity building on technology that directly manipulates the genetic makeup of organisms.
