i am not sure whether this is enough. the mere business owner may be economically feasible too, and may be successful without true vision, at least for some time.

however, having a new vision (that is feasible) may be sufficient to count as an entrepreneur.

i wonder and take it that having a similar vision (that is feasible) is not sufficient to count as being entrepreneurial. it implies merely constituting a competitor, and the issue/ matter reverts to adding/ not adding new value.

Ownership is a legal category that rules things like disposition, legal accountability for the object of ownership, and probably a lot of other items that differentiate being owner or not owner of something.

Entrepreneurship is a category at a different level. Perhaps a prolific pair for Entrepreneurship would be Business Administration.

Agreed about "Business Leadership" for Entrepreneur. However if you are looking for a pair "Entrepreneur vs. XX" to model characteristics of each one (this is juicy), you will need the second component of the pair to create the "XX vs Entrepreneur". Business Leadership is definitely a good candidate for Entrepreneur. Not sure if the workd "business" will help or disturb. I see Leadership primarily related to people. You are recognized as a leader by people; leadership is informal ...etc. If you combine the concept of leadership with the concept of "business" you might end with elements of business administration. My feeling is taht if you use "Leadership" as stand alone, it would be easier to operationalize focusing on People Leadership (OK: "vision" "mission" "strategy" are elements of leadership that are business leadership: therefore my doubt).

Going by its French etymology, the word entrepreneur means one who undertakes. The contemporary definition is that one who manages a business is willing to undertake losses for earning profits.

I think, any hair splitting beyond this point, can be only of academic interest.

And for academic purpose- I the entrepreurs may be put into different categories and subcategories - such as first generation, 2nd generation, flat, dynamic etc. However, I don't see a case where someone who assumes risk to deliver something, can be removed from the definition of entrepreneur.

@Ajoy many things in life are graded. Fruit and meat are prime examples. Meat is meat, but you get different qualities or grades. (In the case of meat it is based on age and fat among other things.)

I also then anticipate different levels or qualities of entrepreneurship. One can consider this when comparing managers and entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs (between entrepreneurs themselves).

I would claim for a very restrictive definition.

There is a huge literature on this subject, not all of it in my opinion valuable. There is a bunch of academic navel gazing by people who have never been there and done that. (I am a veteran of 4 technology startups, 1 early exit success and 3 failures.)

The place to start is the basic definition: an entrepreneur is someone who starts a new business and undertakes significant risks to do so. If you are looking for metrics, then you need to focus on measuring risk. Note: innovation, value proposition, competitive advantage, none of that factors into the definition.

It is true that many new ventures, especially in places like Silicon Valley, are innovating in product, service, or business model, but it is not a requirement. A man who chooses to start a lawn care business himself instead of buying into a franchise is himself an entrepreneur.

When focusing on risk, the easiest to quantify is the likelihood of financial loss, however, there are also other losses as a consequence of failure, such as reputation and self esteem. I haven't surveyed the psychological literature on that to see if there is work in this area or not.

I tend to think of entrepreneur as a title. Once you take the risk to start a new venture, you are one. You do not cease to be one if your company prospers, fails, is acquired and you work for the acquiring company.

Serial entrepreneurs are a special breed of person. They can't not stop taking on risks to start new companies. There is probably a psychological angle here, because why would someone do it, especially if they have already succeeded in a prior venture, leaving them with generational wealth.

However, when Stevenson et al (1985) define entrepreneurship as the process of creating value by bringing together a unique package of resources to exploit an opportunity, it is nothing else what Schumpeter (1912) had defined as innovation: putting things together in a new way as "new combinations" (Schumpeter)

This is absolutely right, innovation is very often too much thought through the lenses of the supply side and too less by the demand side of customers !

Entrepreneur is a person who provides solution to the market by creating value to his idea, it is his passion. A business owner is a person who just run his enterprise like a profession . Many researchers has discussed on this and according to age the understanding also has been changed.

...as it may still imply a non-entrepreneur. That definition is not sufficient to define an entrepreneur. It may simply a "manager with money" (for lack of a better term).

I would recommend to measure the success of a startup by the rate at which it produces monetisable value (aka traction).
