I'm about to embark on a research to study impact of major sporting events on local entrepreneurship. Ideally, I would like to link it to green or sustainable entrepreneurship. I would appreciate ideas to define my research question. Thanks.
i think your research question would be centered around trying to improve our understanding on the relationship between major sporting events and local entrepreneurship. But the question is what would this knowledge make us understand better?
Perhaps you can look at local entrepreneurship as innovation, then you can investigate to see if more innovation brings about more sporting events. But again do we need a lot of innovation? A single successful innovation can be replicated any where in the world and produce similar result.
For this research I assume that you have already identified some existing entrepreneurial ventures that you would like to investigate; more specifically, into how new startups link green products and services, paraphernalia, food and related products and services to sports to promote each other.
First you may want to define the nature and context (location specific issues) of the sport and the enterprises in question. Then state your purpose for the study. This will immediately clarify many things for you. Now that you have established the fundamentals, the following will be worthwhile looking into.
Which theoretical framework is going to guide the study? Proceed with the literature review which will help you redefine your question after understanding what others have done.
If you want to measure the effect of a particular sporting activity on green products and services provided by an enterprise or vice-versa, then a quantitative study will do.
If you choose a single or a couple of enterprise to study in depth a case study will also be a viable option.
If you want to understand motives, decisions, or choices behind the consumption of green products and services by particular fans and enthusiasts of a particular sporting event, then qualitative or mixed methods would do - even correlational studies.
For example, investigating why or how such entrepreneurial activities fail or succeed may be useful questions from which fruitful policy recommendations can be derived.
Understanding how the location of such sporting activities affects local consumption politics and the growth of such ventures can also be a viable option to look into.
You can focus on the various business function performances of local enterprises like financial performance, HR ( issues and challenges), marketing, R&D, production and lay out etc...
Then you can link this by providing sustainable strategies for successful enterprise.
