I have been working on compensation for Holocaust survivors in Israel and Germany since about 2005, and have established a legal clinic for the right of Holocaust survivors at the law faculty of Tel Aviv University, but my knowledge of the situation in the Netherlands is very limited.

It does not deal with compensation directly but it delivers the certificate proving you were in camp or a forced labour. This certificate then gives you the right to compensation.

my research is about the compensation Dutch Jews received around 2002, the so-called MAROR (https://www.maror.nl - only in Dutch), which had also a branch in Israel, called Platform Israel. MAROR was an initiative of the Dutch state together with insurance companies, banks and the stock exchange due to their dubious role afterWorld War II. It was a symbolic lump-sum payment, next to restituting some concrete material losses people had (ground lease, banc accounts etc.). On the technical details Berthold Unfried has provided some information in his book ‘Vergangenes Unrecht’.
In my research I explore via interviews the reception of those measures; interviewing first, second and third generation to explore in which way they are (or not) meaningful to people. My frame is family memory: What do we learn about compensation payments by looking from a family/generation perspective, and the other way round, what does the way compensation is talked about reveals about family memory, questions of subjectivity and how ideas about recognition change over time and across generations.
Some experiences in Dutch families are briefly mentioned in two articles I wrote for my earlier project ‚The afterlife of restitution’ (Aus Sicht der Nachkommen; Es sind einfach Zahlungen); both available online.
A comprehensive article on the MAROR case is still in the making. I could send you a lecture I gave at various conferences, providing a brief overview and preliminary results.
