I’m asking about the approximate number of individuals per hectare of the area planted with orcharde number of individuals per hectare of the area planted with orchards,
@ Isam, it depends on the number of family member, type of crop and method of cultivation they are adopting. In general, I guess, if you have five family members then one hectare of land is economical.
In order to choose a cost-effective agricultural area, geographical information of the area, soil fertility, rainfall, compatibility of plant species with the agricultural area is needed.
Once you establish the standard output per crop type you can correlate to the desired return to maintain the family and either choose one crop or a combo according to what can be cultivated in that area.
In addition to soil, water, climate and relief, one or more crops that are technically viable on site are needed, and whose economic return is sufficient to maintain the needs of the family group throughout the year.
The number is a function of many variables such as soil fertility, irrigation, the economy of the family, crop variety planted, government policies, and climatic changes. This determines the return on the investment that will sustain the family size.
Sir, it'll depend on the Number and age of the members in that particular family, region or country of cultivation, crop type and cultivation practices that they are following. However, for instance, four membered family in Asian country, will have to hold at least 1-2 Ha. land area.
This problem of farm size and family size was studied by the Land Tenure Center at the University of Wisconsin in the 1960s and 1970s. If you are really interested in this relationship, you will have to review historical documents from the time of the Professor Don Kanel and others of that time.
If you have enough information on households, income and farm size, you can determine the optimal farm size in terms of food security, income generation and other relevant agricultural and rural development objectives.
I think number of factors determine that, first of all, health of soil matters. Beside this, type of farming; crop type , cultivation practices, inputs , gestation period matters
Contributors should note that the question is intrinsically an economic one. Other than the various agronomic and climatic factors, the crux is whatever is produced has to render an income which will cover the expected costs to maintain the persons concerned.
The combo of production factors needs to be translated to the ultimate value of the output. Consequently the area necessary to meet expected revenue can be calculated.
