Data mining and AI have overlapping subjects but differ in scope. For example AI uses image processing algorithms to provide relevant data to the agent (robot, automated avatar, etc.) and can be used for further machine learning processing to guide the actions of the agent. Data mining can use machine learning to extract meaningful patterns that will later be turned into knowledge for user consumption. I would prefer the term data mining rather than "big data" due to its multiple interpretations.

Data mining and information retrieval have special focus on Data Management and Library and information science. They allow to better techniques on which to derive taxonomies and do better discrimination of important patterns.

While the librarian and data scientist have also overlapping subjects I think their focus is different. One area where the librarian must focus (not necessarily the data scientist) is archival science. Data scientist do not worry(for the most part) on what happens to the data after being processed, the librarian does.

Part of the library sciences is on how to preserve documents (digital or otherwise) decades, centuries from now. That in itself is a difficult problem. Can you imagine still using PDf's 1,000 years from now (assuming the human population is still around)! What are the storage requirements for 1000 years from now? These are important questions that for the most part are not important to data scientist.

I think that data engineers and librarians have more in common since both are responsible for storage. Nonetheless, librarians are tasked with more longer term goals of preservation and not just processing. I would suggest for librarians to study hard on storage formats, encoding and migration strategies of digital formats to keep digital documents up to date in their storage . As storage grows so will the need for efficient techniques to index and retrieve using skills based on information retrieval, machine learning and natural language processing.

My biased opinion is that data literacy hints at the librarian as a passive rather than active player as in management. I do feel that their role is active and they do manage collections requiring data management.

I think that you should initially explore both, or do a survey before deciding and maybe use this as part of the introduction to your work. I think your question is highly relevant to the study

Before formulating your title, perhaps you would like to explore the role of the "Data Steward", who is combining the skills of a data manager, a data scientist and a data curator.

Hi Evgenios Vlachos , Thank you so much for reply , as far as concern of the Data Stewardship, Librarians are working in the area (Object data, business data, process data and system data).

Data Curator mostly manage the repository of the libraries after acquiring and refining of the data. Most of libraries and librarian are involve in this task skills. I want to data object and data process and system data to know the awareness of librarian. Any study (Dissertation, These, Project) you can refer me in the context of Big Data, Data Scientists or data literacy.

Big data/data mining, business intelligence/analytics, data science, distant reading, knowledge discovery etc. are all different terms used in different disciplines to denote essentially the same thing: statistical analysis and discovery of novel patterns from data and presenting them in the form conducive to human consumption.
