I have quite a stupid question about safety precautions when cutting out bands from an agarose gel under a UV transilluminator. I am aware that you need to wear lab coat, long sleeved clothing, face visor and so on..Furthermore, I was wondering if I need to work necessarily from behind the glass that protects the transilluminator..(the glass that you pull up and down) by handling the gel from distance or I can get closer to the gel (beyond the glass) without getting damaged. I ask this because I don't have much manual skills yet, so when I tried for the first time to handle the gel from behind the glass I was not able to see properly the edge of the band I was cutting. I hope to have been clear.

If you are considering the safety issues as you said especially protecting your eyes and face using UV protected goggles and face shield that is enough. Do not forget to cut out the gel in low UV mode and try to complete the job in shortest time.
I myself after a brief look at the gel, while wearing uv protected face shield, open the protection glass of luminator in 45 degree angle (a little less or more) and cut of the gel as soon as possible.
