Dear All, I want to ask about some molar calculation of networks formed through esterification. First, I have a linear polymer chain with single pendant hydroxyl grp. Second, i have a diacid crosslinker (bifunctional crosslinker). Through using these two acids ends, i want to form esters with OH of my polymer chain. My question is, how i will calculate mole percent of crosslinker, if i want to use 10 percent crosslinker or 10 percent crosslinking??
I recommend you to study the effect of molar amount of the crosslinker. According to my experience, the concentration of the polymer have a more dominant effect on crosslinking density compared to crosslinker concentration. Good luck
Your question is somewhat puzzling. In order to have a crosslinked structure you need a bifunctional polymer chain and at lease trivalent crosslinker. If you have only one OH somewhere on the polymer chain and a bivalent acid, you will have only a larger molecular weight polymer.
Chapter Cross-Linking and Structure of Polymer Networks
Trifunctional acids such as Citric acid will make it a lot easier to cross-link than di-functional acids. A higher amount of acid will speed up the cross-linking reaction since it functions as both reagent and catalyst.
