What is the difference between crosscheck and Turnitin?
Recently I got an email that crosscheck results have reported similarity from a paper which I have never come across so far, I was literally confused about how does crosscheck works?
The way that any plagiarism detection software works is to identify content similarity matches. That is, the software scans a database of crawled content and identifies the text components and then compares it to the components, or content, of other work.
There are many plagiarism checker software programs. Some of them have an advanced complicated algorithm to find similarities. For instance, the software detects and highlights a few words from your text exactly copied from elsewhere. It may find again something somewhere else in your text copied from elsewhere. After all, the software counts the total amount of similarities giving the percent of similarities. If nothing or negligible amount is detected, the paper passes crosscheck step and goes to the next review step. Otherwise, the paper is returned/rejected due to a large amount of plagiarisms.
If you didn't copy intentionally, don't worry, it must not be very much. It is nearly impossible to see one paper is mostly copied from elsewhere while their authors really don't know about it. The journals understand intentional or unintentional copies.
From my point of view, I don't recommend you to use such free software checkers of plagiarism.
I haven't used them before because I am afraid that the original content of my manuscript may be copied and sold to others before I can publish it.
I know that the problem is not easy for us, especially that we haven't enough money to buy enough food and, in turn, to buy such software. Unfortunately, you have to pay for the sake of getting good results. So, I always write using my own words.
In any way, it is not well for your reputation if there were accusations of plagiarism. This is because plagiarism is a sin! If it is, severe action may be taken and/or legal notice may be given.
The term “plagiarism” has different meanings, but it usually includes copying somebody else’s work without permission. It occurs when a writer uses, intentional or unintentional, someone else’s language, ideas, or material without acknowledging its source.
These detectors work as the followings:
The document needed to be checked is fed to the plagiarism' software checker.
Then, the text of this document is broken into smaller chunks of phrases.
Next, these chunks are searched for similarity by using one or more search engines.
Finally, when encountering similar content, the tool marks the phrase or words that are plagiarized with a different color and specifying the places that are copied from.
One of my friends was accused of plagiarism; do you know why?
After about three months, his research paper was rejected because of plagiarism. When he checked the journal report, he found that his paper was accused of plagiarism and with a 61% percentage. The reason is that his manuscript was previously uploaded as a preprint. It took him another two months to solve the problem and removing the manuscript from the database of the preprint.
So, in order to solve such this type of issues, it may take several months of following up to remove the manuscript from the database of the preprint. Anyhow, If there were accusations of plagiarism, it is not well for any researcher's reputation, in any meaning.
Thanks prof Nidhal Kamel Taha El-Omari for the good question. Clearly, preprints of your own work can contribute to higher percentages of plagiarism because the plagiarism checkers either do text-matching or semantic search. My advice is may be to differ upload of a manuscript under consideration for journal or conference publication to these preprint sites.
