Doctors in india are using high dose steroids(125 mg of methylprednisolone) and meropeneum as first line of treatment for covid.What is the role of meropeneum in covid treatment ? How come an antibiotic works on virus ?If they think any superinfection caused pneumonia in corona,why they would not go for culture test first.Any thoughts?
Interesting question. Meropenem is probably used to treat superinfection, although it is not frequent in COVID-19 (or not so frequent as in other viral infections as influenza). Corticoids as dexametason and methylprednisolone have been used in COVID-19 with some results, and are plently avaliable. Other drugs have more questionable effects and are out of range for common people, so probably that is why are used in India. DXM is what we are using in my hospital too.
