Hydroxychloroquine has always been prescribed for the long-term treatment of inflammatory or autoimmune diseases, such as systematic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, or Sjögren's syndrome. However, it must be said that these pathologies make patients more susceptible to infections, despite possible preventive treatment.
Speculation about a preventive role for hydroxychloroquine when the drug has been administered chronically is therefore an open question. Several studies are currently underway to assess the effect of preventive treatment with hydroxychloroquine in highly exposed healthcare workers.
