Metal glycolates have been widely used as precursors for the preparation of metal oxide nanomaterials.
Solvothermal process using zinc acetate and ethylene glycol affords the formation of hierarchically nanostructured ZnO.
But I want to prepare Zinc glycolate (not ZnO) precursor which can be transformed into ZnO by thermal decomposition.
I think about decreasing the time or temperature of the reaction to get zinc glycolate.
you can prepare Zinic glycolate by refluxing Zinic acetate with ethylene glycol at a certain temperature. After a certain time zinic glycolate will be formed. this my point of view

Synthesis of zinc formate-glycolate that described in our articles is carried out at temperatures 80-100 C. At room temperature this synthesis is not realized, so it is chemical reaction.
We would like to notice that we use zinc formate as initial compound. For zinc acetate, the result will be the different.

The zinc gluconate nanostructures can be synthesized by a direct template route in the lamellar liquid crystal formed by Triton X-100/n-C10H21OH/H2O system. I think using sol gel method and using any mesoporous catalyst (mp CuO, mp Au, mp Ag etc). You can fetch your result
