I learned this story from a friend with whom I have lost contact. I have tried and failed to find the source of the story online. Below is my recollection of it. Please help me with its source if you know it. Thank you.
"There is a story about a wealthy American business owner who vacationed on an idyllic island. As he spent his swell time savouring the soft sunlight and the beach at the seashore, he could observe the inhabitants going about their everyday life – fishing and hunting, enjoying their catch and some organic consumables from the wild to go with with it, children playing around (swimming now and then), everyone staying up to enjoy some nighttime stories before retiring. With slight surprises and disruptions now and then (such as quarrels, brawls, and deaths of group members), their ordinary daily living rolls along in this undramatic way. The vacationing business owner thought: “What an unambitious group!” His patience with them running out, he meets up with some group members and throws them a challenge: “Do you know you can make the best of the advantage you have in this wonderful environment to create a better life for yourselves?” Curious, the Islanders ask him, “How?” “You can expand your fishing venture into a big business”, he replies. “How?”, they ask again. “You can catch more fish, eat to your fill, and sell the surplus to make money.” “What do we do with the money?” “You could acquire more efficient caravels and bigger nets, catch fish in abundance for export to faraway places, some of which I can show you. This way, you make lots of money that you could use to solve all your problems and do anything else you like.” They ask, “Then what?” He replies, “You could then take a break from the hard work to enjoy your money?” “How?”, they pursue. “You take a break from the hustle, vacation somewhere, and have the time of your life,” he says. Their final reply comes as a rhetorical question: “Isn’t that what we are doing with our lives already?” The holidaymaker stands agape, unable to find another fitting response."
