Dear there, I suppose you'd better choose one to fit into your expertise and career development. 5G may be more related to wireless communications, while IoT is caring more about the massive machine-type communications. Therefore, 5G is more ideal for a big team work unless you are so good with telecommunication backgrounds; and IoT stuff can be highly tailored for a small-team and individual workload.

Ka Ad , Both areas are very interesting for research but IoT will have several areas which you can work on such as IoT security, IoT protocols etc. You could check out some papers in these areas and try to find some challenges to work on. Find attached paper by Professor John A. Stankovic on some research directions for the Internet of Things .This might be helpful. Goodluck!
