Turtle grass is a perennial species of hydrophyte which belongs to the Hydrocharitaceae family of the flowering plants. Its scientific name is Thalassia testidunum. It forms meadows in shallow sandy or muddy location in the Carribean sea and Gulf of Mexico. It reproduces both by sexual and vegetative reproduction. Flowering in the plant generally occurs in spring and early summer. The plant is dioecious therefore male and female flowers are produced on two different plants. The seeds are viviparous. Vegetative reproduction takes place though rhizomes.
