As far as I know Molybdenum is no alternative for Au or Ag, as it has interband transitions above about 1 eV (below 1240 nm, see e.g. link). If you look for a cheaper alternative, what about Aluminum?

I agree that in the visible Aluminum is a good alternative for Au or Ag. For that matter, while in the mid-IR Ag is better, as far as plasmonic properties, than Au, we found that in the near-IR and visible Al is better than either Au or Ag.
