On the one side, multicriteria analysis is widely used to combine different phenomena, indicators, and stakeholders' perspectives.
On the other one, multivariate analysis seems quite underdeveloped in the current scenario.

I also think that multivariate analysis can yield very insightful results, because you can actually try to isolate the effects of certain variables, while still controlling for other factors. See for example my study (or studies by Jukka Heinnonen, he did very interesting work in this regard).

Yes, it will largely depend on number of factors: use of right mix of variables, applicable weightages for the same, and how these variables are linked to the desired outputs. If there is variation among the variables (not the right set of variables) it will definitely impact on the analysis; while if variables represent and relate to multiple themes / outputs, the desired outcome based on multivariate analysis could be largely accurate.
I would say yes. I found this paper very useful as a outline of the method: Soares, J., Marques, M. & Monteiro, C. (2003) A multivariate methodology to uncover regional disparities: A contribution to improve European Union and government decisions. European Journal of Operational Research Vol. 145 pp 121-135. I was involved in a project for the Regional Development Agency (http://www.nerip.com/library/view.aspx?id=1059) which used multi-variate analysis to create a typology of areas. This was part of a process though and I would give a word of caution that MVA should only be part of a bigger suit of methods. I hope this is useful. Paul
