Mass is an "extrinsic" property of matter, whereas weight is a force that results from the action of gravity on matter: it measures how strongly the force of gravity pulls on that matter. Weight W is the product of the mass m of the object and the magnitude of the local gravitational acceleration g, thus: W = mg. The unit of measurement for weight is that of force, which is the newton. For example, an object with a mass of one kilogram has a weight of about 9.8 newtons on the surface of the Earth, and about one-sixth as much on the Moon. In this sense of weight, a body can be weightless only if it is far away (in principle infinitely far away) from any other mass.  In most practical everyday situations the word "weight" is used when, strictly, "mass" is meant. For example, most people would say that an object "weighs one kilogram", even though the kilogram is a unit of mass.

 I know this basic things. But my question was what is role of gravity in calculating the mass of the active material in preparing the electrode. I want to know that the method in the example is correct or not. I am also surprised why I have to use gravity here. If you cal tell that the method of estimating of mass in that example  is wrong or not, will be the answer of question. 

The unit of active mass is g or kg so there should not be any g factor involved. active mass is simple the mass of total electrode mass - mass of bare electrode provided the binder is burnt up fully.

The weight of your active material equal 17-12= 5 mg. You need not to use gravity here.

you already know that weight and mass are fundamentally different quantities (and of cource their units, also). However, mass (in Kg) and "weight"(in Kg*) are often used with the same number but in different units. The (mass1 of your) active material equals to 5mg (=17mg-12mg), e.g. mass1 in mg units.
