Do you guys find it applicable and/ or acceptable to adopt a non-literary approach in a literary study?

For example, applying a Readers' Response approach (which is used mainly in education and classroom related research) on literature published on social media. (I wonder if you have other examples in your mind).

I think you may be very interested in literary theory. I can recommend two excelle t books on that:

- Terry Eagleton’s Literary Theory;

- Antoine Campagnon’s The Demon of Theory.

Well depend of the dissertation that are you doing. Bachelor, master or doctoral dissertation. Bachelor just to demonstrating that you learned very well the literature analysis, you can chose novel, poetry o theater (play). In the master level, you has to apply at least one literary theory applied to a novel or specific topic in poetry or theater. In the doctoral, you can choose a debate, discussion, limitations of the theories and you can add your personal point of view to fill the gap in the analysis. So, about methodology, just apply what you learned during your courses work. It is long process but very interesting at the end.

Terry Eagleton’s Literary Theory is a good starting, depend of the level that you are or depend how you love literature. Remember in a scholar paper is to show the skills that you acquired during the university years, but if you are passionate you have to go beyond, and think outside the box. You have to build a strong analysis with the tools and show a piece of art. the art of textual analysis. I love Semiotic and I combine with textual sociology, and little salt and pepper with autobiography.

Dear Hessam Abedini , there are good sources on conducting a literary research. I highly recommend the following titles:

1. Simon Eliot and W.R. Owens. A Handbook to Literary Research (2005)

2. Wayne C. Booth, et al.The Craft of Research (2008).

3. MLA Handbook, 8th edition, (2016).
