I apologize since this is not a strictly research-oriented question, but since many of ResearchGate users work at universities and with students, I wanted to ask for your suggestions on this matter.
I am looking for a computer (desktop) program, Windows or Linux-based (preferably Windows) for creating and maintaining a large database of exam questions with the possibility of automatic exam creation. Freeware is preferred, but please include suggestions for paid programs too. It should not be web-based, nor is it for creating online exams, but for printed exams (multiple choice type).
Security is an important issue as well as the option of archiving the information when was a certain question used (for example date or some other tag).
Please share your experiences with such software, which are advantages and drawbacks, what do you like about it and what you don't.

This does not quite fit with your requirements (i.e., it does not allow the fully automatic generation of exams), but I use LYX, and specifically -- the Branches function. By one switch you can get either a marking template (answers revealed) or a blank exam sheet. And, as this is basically a Latex-based software (free!), the quality of printed results is first class, pictures may be easily incorporated in questions, etc. Some ideas and examples of this approach can be googled out.
Still, from "some" to "a lot of" manual work required.
There exists such a program, it is named Scientific Word (SciWord). Also, try LaTeX package AcroTeX
I am sorry but this looks like slacking-off oneself from making a thought provoking exam. (With out AI) Using software for making or keeping a storage of previously tested questions so that you could ask them again, I think, is not the best way to test students.

Thanks for your input. I just wanted to mention that I found what would be the best option for our needs - it's Par System from Scantron, though it seems quite costly. :-(
Jiwan Ninglekhu - I understand your point, but in our case we need a highly standardized written part of the exam. We leave the thought-provoking part for the oral part of the exam. :-)
