Research contribution in a research article is determine by the order of the authors of the paper. For example 1st author is the one who has contributed the most, and so on ..... What sense it makes to give an importance (if it is there) to the corresponding author.
I think they are a focal person for doing the correspondence between research journals and research team and anyone from the author list can be a corresponding author. Does it justify to rate corresponding author equal to or next to the first author.
How to "give importance"? is there any scale to measure it?what if the authors' name are in alphabetical order?
In most of research paper, the first author and corresponding author are considered as same person, however, corresponding author has more responsibilities ( in terms of revision, editing and payment).

I agree @Dr. Imtiaz Arif, the corresponding author is a very crucial role in paper publication. It not compulsory that the person should be the first author. The person could be the last but technically, the person has contributed immensely to the article and really understood the nitty gritty of the research (mainly, the methodology and other crucial aspects of the paper) and all correspondents can be directed to him.

The corresponding author can be the first or the second or the third author in the list of contributing authors. It is a matter of convenience, to whom the editor refers in questions related to the paper. The order of contributing authors is different in various disciplines, sometimes it is the adviser of the paper who puts himself the first, sometimes the most contributing author who is the first, and in mathematics it is by alphabetical order.

Corresponding author is someone who usually corresponded during paper evaluation etc. He performs the role of spoken person of group of authors, he never ever mean to say something at his own. whenever he got some query, he consult it with other authors and react accordingly. so meanwhile like all authors he is the authors but it he does not entitled any other importance on the hand of contribution.

However, in my observation corresponding author is more involved/Active in research/research community compared to the rest, he is supposed to do all the corrections and interact with journal. But I have another question, what if something goes wrong, the corresponding author is responsible the most? for example, last year, Elsevier retracted articles because of 100% plagiarisms
The corresponding author is the contact person in case of any correspondence regarding the paper. He/she is the focal person to contact on any issue concerning the publication. The person must have contributed immensely to the paper.
Corresponding author is author to whom queries are send regarding the manuscript. He may be at any place in the autor list.
Corresponding authorship is not limited to first or second position. It could even be the last author but should have contributed significantly to the research.

Sharing many of the listed opinions I would like to mention some other points: 1st author is not always the one who has contributed the most, some researchers prefer to order names alphabetically. Sometimes, correspondence might be decided based on the road-map of the project. Furthermore, in some cases more experienced scholars may assign/guide their followers/students as corresponding authors for their joint research to convey them the knowledge of being responsible.
The contribution of a corresponding author is often very important if he/she is an early career researcher. The contribution of the first author is highly regarded in the PhD job market or in case of job promotion.
Corresponding authorship is given to the focal person that has high contributions to the paper and would be able to take such responsibility of a corresponding author
