What is the right way of conducting a tensile test of MIG-brazed overlap joint? Is it necessary to prepare dog-bone shaped specimen or a 25mm wide strip will suffice? What could be the differences between these two specimens and the results obtained? Thanks.

for overlap joints you should not need dog-bone shaped specimens. If you are performing a comparative study e.g. looking for optimal (wleding) processing conditions you can try with simple rectangular specimens (as reported in a number of scientific pubblications). On the other hand, if you have to provide accurate measurements, you have to check your local stadards, or ASTM ones.

One thing to note is that if your joint is overmatched then it might not fail at the joint but away from it and behave like a tensile specimen in some cases.
