Titanium oxide, when absorbing a quantum of light with an energy of more than 3.2 eV (this is light with a wavelength of less than 385 nm - ultraviolet), generates free charge carriers - negative electrons and positive vacancies (holes). Electrons and holes, coming to the surface of TiO2, enter into oxidation-reduction reactions with oxygen and water vapor from the air or water. During these reactions, strong oxidizers (O2-, -OH, and radicals) are formed, which directly interact with various organic pollutants. The formation of such particles makes the TiO2 surface a very strong oxidizer, which allows decomposing harmful substances by their photocatalytic oxidation to safe H2O and CO2.
Therefore, photocatalytic activity should be studied in the ultraviolet region. The IR region characterizes the vibrations of bonds.
