PCN cyst is the main survival component of this pest, it comes out of cyst on chemical signal from roots of potato or some other crops and attack roots, forms cyst again. any of the nematicide which can work on cyst in soil or either a chemical which can dissolve the cyst in soil will be effective measure all over world PCN control by crop rotation, trap crops and nematicides only help in controlling at one level but its eradication is not possible. So the area where once infestation is reported can never be used as area for potato breeder seed production as per Breeder seed production protocols. So my query stands at a point of application of chemical for either dissolving the cyst or signal it to hatch will help. Any such solution may plz be forwarded.
As a general nematode control measure, One could apply more organic matter to soil which provide higher amount of organic carbon and nitrogen for higher microbial population and activity. Many microbes parasitize, compete, produce secondary metabolite which play vital role in the reduction of growth, population and activities of different plant parasites including PPN.
Potato Cyst nematode can be controlled by crop rotation as well as using Nematicides, such as fosthiazate for the control of nematodes.
What makes cyst nematode so difficult has you state is the longevity of survival related to long term survival associated with the resistant cyst and the fact than only 20 to 30% hatching in the year after the potato crop.
Wild potato family members which can stimulate hatching which can be used as a cover crop can possibly elicit the hatching factors. Using the trap crops of wild species the reduction of the population can reach 60 to 90%.
The use of biofumigation crops might be part of a biological control strategy.
Besides the use of biofumigation, and cover cropping the use of tillage can be effective in lowering the population.
Work with soybean cyst nematodes show that intensified potassium fertilization and the use of compost and compost teas can mitigate.
In some areas a use of solarization might be employed effectively and the potato breeders are developing tolerant and resistance lines to this pest.
Use of multiple strategies may be effective in the management and there may not be any single practice which effectively manages the issues.
thanks for your reply, i want to discuss a little more ,plz suggest further, I worked with sodium hypochlorite on the tuber treatment and it worked well. but i tried this chemical in soil ,it does not work. can you suggest any way forward.
