The first step in order to solve the problem is to put a physical model for the multihop system.

As a proposal the system components are two terminal stations and intermediate stations. There are two scenarios concerning the intermediate stations:

They can act as repeaters on the level of the rf signals or at the level of the base band regeneration system.

So, every station will have a transceiver according to the mode of operation.

You can build the transceivers codecs and modems as well as the rf front end for the signal processing.The processing of the signals in every station can be estimated according to the processing required in the codec and modems as well as the rf front end. So, every hop will add complexity that is additional electronics and delay because of the processing time.

Then you have to select the suitable channel models for wireless transmission.

Latency will also caused by the time of flight of the electromagnetic waves between the hops. But this may be smaller than the processing time in the hops.

So, as the number of hops increases the latency increases, more processing increases also the delay time. Longer hop distance increases the latency time.
