I have submitted a review article in a High Impact Factor journal. I got a response that 'This manuscript can not be considered as review article but It could be considered as 'Commentary Article'. I am not well aware of the commentary article. Could you please suggest to me if I should publish my review article as a commentary article? Is it a good idea, given that journal is a recognized journal. Is a commentary article equally valuable as a review article in academia?
I suppose if I had to choose, it would be the Review article, which often surveys commentary equally from multiple sources. But both are needed.
The difference isn't necessarily a matter of one being intrinsically better or worse than the other, and the terms "review" and "commentary" don't have the same meanings for all journals; what one journal calls a review another may call a commentary. However, sometimes a review is held to be a comprehensive and expository treatment of a work (or set of works) whereas a commentary is held to be a critical treatment of a specific work, which may only address some aspect(s) of the work rather than the whole. So the difference has to do with the nature or focus of the treatment.
Both are equally important, however for me it is important to provide a more critical/alternative take on any key issue, leading a more succinct appraisal, which I suppose is the very nature of a commentary article.
