A combination of Relational Databases and data endpoints using API is a good alternate to ontologies. It will save trillions of dollars and decades of researchers.

A relational data model wrapped around RESTful API makes no alternative to an ontology. These two approaches are for different purposes thus alter in assumptions. While at first glance they might be similar , the data models represent data (information plus their semantics), the later are for storing knowledge. Please analyze e.g. CWA and OWA.
