I have a question about collision energy in ESI-MS.
As you know, there is a collision energy(CE) setting for making product ion or fragments from the parent ion.
During this process, can we use and see the effect of CE when using MS?
I saw that this CE is well used for MS/MS method...
Actually, I set this CE with only MS mode when I conducted ESI-MS.
Therefore, I'm curious that whether this CE has also an effect on not only MS/MS mode, but also the MS mode?...

What kind of instrument do you use? Triple quad? ion trap? In TQ a collision gas is necessary. In simple MS mode I suppose that CE is set to zero, and nothing should be observed.
The use of the collision energy (CID) to further fragment an ion is optional during analysis (for LC-MS and of course part of MS-MS). It is a very useful and common feature to have. Please consider obtaining some basic professional instrument and software training from the vendor/manufacturer of your specific LC-MS system to better understand how to use it (or a qualified third-party).

If this is for a tandem quad (aka triple quad) then its possible to perform MS and MS/MS experiments on the system. During usual MS experiments one would apply a very low collision energy, commonly

Jean-François Gal I used the quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer (micrOTOF-Q III, Bruker, USA). And I set the CE as 35 eV without MS/MS mode.
Then , you mean that the CE would be zero even if I set the CE?

I don't know the details of the instrument you use. It is different from a triple quadrupole described by Doug Stevens.
If a collision gas is present in the collision multipole; then set CE to zero or the lowest value.
The nest would be to ask Bruker. I am sure that a technician/engineer would answer you question.

Thanks for the information. Indeed I am emeritus (our university is now "Université Cote d'Azur" located in Nice and around). As you, I have a long experience in various spectrometries (I don't like "spectroscopies"). We have several ion traps and an Orbitrap in the MS facility. I worked also with Bruker with a home built FTICR.
In Orbitrap CID More collision voltage is mean to effectively fragment the molecule.” it can be observed an increase of the activation energies of both fragmentation processes as the molecular weight increases (McLafferty JACS 1967, Memboeuf AC 2010, Indelicato JMS 2013). This phenomenon can be explained with the degree of freedom effect, which predicts a linear increase of the characteristic collision excitation energy as the molecular weight of the compound increases (proportional to the number of vibrational degrees of freedom of the compound).

When your experience with Bruker is positive, then this is most important for the research. Perhaps, the Bruker's support for France is better than this one for Bulgaria.

It was long ago... and we had a research collaboration to develop FTICR. I don't know how they cooperate currently. I agree that Thermo has a good support team in France.
