Just 2 days ago there was a discussion about code-switching skills and strategies in healthy controls; so I wanted to add an addendum to that. What is code-switching and mixing in people with stroke?
Code -switching in an IWA is likely both. Many compensatory strategies employed by non-brain damaged and brain damaged as well are applied unconsciously. The issue is how systematic a behavior is in its occurrence rather than if it is consciously employed. It is the systematic nature that suggests that it is the application of a cognitive strategy or not. The sociologist Harvey sacks discussed the issue of whether conversational strategies are conscious or not. See Simmons-Mackie & Damico in aphasiology in 1999 on compensations and much of the CA work in aphasia by R. Wilkinson and S. Beeke.
