I would like to start a discussion about barriers to utilization of clinical practice guidelines (CPG). Why are guidelines not always followed? Do you have any suggestions to increase use of CPG in the workplace?
1. Often times clinical guidelines were introduced after new information made the guidelines outdated before they could be implemented.
2. Telling providers how they should practice, innately, produces resistance to practice change. In short, providers “feel” their practice is “up to date” and “the best”.
It is important to to measure outcomes prior to introducing practice guidelines and tie the guidelines to the goal of improving the afore mentioned measures. Providers MUST see, feel and think that the guidelines are in their best interest.
Christopher A Smith I suspect you are right in what you say and is supported by the literature. Practitioners may agree with the CPG but are not convinced that implementation will necessarily improve patient outcomes.
Consensus is vital. I am not sure if I understand what you mean by poor skills with CPG...do you mean at the individual level or organizational level? Thank you for your response Rajha A Hamza Al Kassar.Rajha A Hamza Al Kassar
poor skills of individual may be related to him or he . But also it may be related to improper arrengments in the place of work that affect the student eg inconvenent methods used in by nurses who work in ward can confuse the student about what is the right behavior for that should be used
