BSc and MSc students contribute to academic research via projects in research groups, generally under the daily supervision of other team members. Research groups adopt different criteria to decide if students' contributions warrant a role as co-author on scientific publications - or be mentioned under Acknowledgements. In many cases, however, the absence of clear guidelines leads to disappointment and frustration. How should independent conceptual contribution by the student, volume of experimental work, involvement in the writing process and other factors be weighed into a fair decision on co-authorship?
